Ode to my Little Hanky
your old wood aroma fragrance,
sprinkled with roses, and the lavender scent still lingers on my nose
the last time i held you close to my heart.
it was close to summer, but i could feel the December chill as i watched the story of my life unfold right through my very eyes for the first time.
you were there. i held you tightly in my hand.
i sobbed.
i wept.
i cried.
and in between, you gave me comfort.
oh, how lucky i am to have you quietly listening to my sobbing,
my weeping, my crying.
i probably have even cursed at some point. i learned that the truth i was made to believe was a lie. so forgive me for my unfortunate cursing.
how long has it been since you witnessed my first real heartbreak?
do you remember it? i bet you do.
you were there. i held you tightly in my hand.
i was quietly waiting for a love that was never mine.
i was silently agonizing for a stolen moment in time.
i was calmly hoping for him to be mine.
and in between, you gave me comfort. you were all that i got. you were all that i had.
i thank you.
i adore you.
i am grateful to you.
time moved on, and i think of what will become of you. knowing that to use you constantly means shortening your life with me.
but to just keep you.
to just admire you.
and maybe frame you.
that for sure you don’t want me to do.
so i pulled you out again. smoothened out your wrinkles. danced you around.
my dear beloved hanky, i am truly grateful for all the tears you let me out.
thank you, for tucking all my little secrets with you.
please accept my deepest gratitude for all that you do.
always.
forever.
I am this week’s POET of the WEEK and here is my prompt:
. Take out your handkerchief (yes, the one in your pocket right now- no cheating)
• Remember that during the Renaissance period, a handkerchief was considered to be a powerful symbol of a woman. Giving this item to a woman meant true love, honesty, commitment, and righteousness.
. If by chance you don’t have a handkerchief, explore your creative side and imagine you are holding one right now.
• Write an ode to your handkerchief (or make-believe handkerchief). Make it sound like a love ode.
What is an ode?
• A lyric poem in the form of an address to a particular subject, often elevated in style or manner and written in varied or irregular meter;
• A poem meant to be sung.
Your ode is excellent. I can hear the song in this. It pulls at the heart strings. Very touching.
I love your prompt. It was enough to be challenging, but not daunting. Brought me out of my comfort zone, and helped me learn new things. Thank you 😊

A wonderful response to the prompt Mich, (sorry for calling you Michelle:) and relatable to me but not in the form of a handkerchief, but a piece of blanket I found comfort in…way late into adulthood… I enjoyed how you devloped this thought all the way through:)

Such an emotional ode. It’s one thing to write an ode to a hanky; another to infuse it with so much emotion and depth. Great stuff.
