You Are Better Than The Best

NaPoWriMo Day 16

Hopefully, today’s prompt won’t expose you to controversy. Rather than encouraging minimalism, today we challenge you to write a poem of over-the-top compliments. Pick a person, place, or thing you love, and praise it in the most effusive way you can. Go for broke with metaphors, similes, and more.

You Are Better Than The Best

My poems are not poetical
they are not even magical

I write them in the afternoon
unpoetic time no stars no moon

But you are the love of my life
the poetry I write, even in the afterlife

Remember Heathcliff, of “Wuthering Heights”?
you were better than him, like Northern Lights

How about Mr. Darcy of  “Pride and Prejudice”?
nahh, I’ll skip that,  rather, I’ll blow you a kiss

Elizabeth Browning wrote the best love poem for her beloved
your little love notes were better than that instead

“How do I love thee? let me count the ways “, said Elizabeth
you never had to count anything, to begin with, your kiss nailed it

I seldom use figures of speech, no metaphor, no simile
but you alone is the greatest metaphor and the best simile

I smile when I write, I giggle when I get complimented
but I smile the sweetest and giggled the best with you my beloved

My poems may not be poetical
But you made it ever magical

I smile, I giggle, I laugh even when life is tough
and because of you my greatest love

Do You Remember Heathcliff?

Today’s poetry resource is a series of Twitter accounts that tweet phrases from different poets’ work. The Sylvia Plath Bot, as you might expect, tweets snippets of Plath. @PercyBotShelley tweets Shelley, @ruefle_exe tweets bits of Mary Ruefle’s poems, and @carsonbot and @sikenpoems send into the world small fragments of the work of Anne Carson and Richard Siken.

Day 8 NaPoWriMo

For this prompt, I am using a tweet from @carsonbot
“the base of the neck to the end of the spine which he can cause to shiver like a root in the rain”

Do you remember how Heathcliff
passionately loves Catherine?
the first time he laid his eyes on her?
It causes her to shiver
like a root in the rain
from the base
of her neck
to the end of
her spine

Do you remember how Heathcliff
declared he indeed loves Catherine?
that she is his soulmate,
united to him
in eternity?

It made her love him
so intensely that
she claims they
are the same

Do you remember how you gave
“Wuthering Heights” while
we were walking
along the busy
street of

It causes me to shiver
like a root in the rain
from the base
of my neck
to the end of
my spine

Do you remember Heathcliff?
because I remember
him in you
I am your  **Catherine,
you are my **Heathcliff
but unlike them
together we
will be
In love forever.

**Heathcliff, the protagonist of Wuthering Heights (Emily Bronte), is well-known as a romantic hero due to his undying love for Catherine.
